NBA Draft: Utah Jazz select Duke's Grayson Allen with 21st pick

Thursday , June 21, 2018 - 8:06 PM

The Utah Jazz have drafted Duke wing player Grayson Allen with the 21st pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Allen, a 6-foot-5 guard, played four seasons at Duke, including three as a starter. In his sophomore year of 2015-16, he averaged 21.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Allen shot 38 percent from the 3-point line in college.

He posted a mark of 10.31 seconds in the lane agility drill at the NBA Draft combine, a top-five all-time mark in that exercise.

His time at Duke was volatile, including a bout of tripping incidents that led to a suspension and, after one such incident resulted in a technical foul in a 2016 game, Allen threw a screaming tantrum and punched chairs on the bench.

The 22-year-old rookie is one of just five players in Duke history to tally at least 1,900 points, 400 rebounds and 400 assists during his career.

For the first time in three seasons, Utah did not participate in a draft day trade. The Jazz traded their original first-round selections in both 2016 and 2017.

Donovan Mitchell, who was in Brooklyn at the draft, interrupted Allen’s interview with ESPN to give him a big hug. Mitchell, from Louisville, played against Allen several times in conference play.

Thursday’s draft began with the Phoenix Suns selecting Arizona big man Deandre Ayton first overall and the Sacramento Kings drafting Duke’s Marvin Bagley III.

Euroleague star Luka Doncic went third to Atlanta, but was later traded to Dallas for Oklahoma’s Trae Young, whom Dallas took fifth.

The Jazz had the 52nd overall pick in the second round but traded it to the Houston Rockets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
