MANTUA — A Logan man died in a high-speed crash in Sardine Canyon Tuesday evening.
At 5:56 p.m., a 2003 Mercy Sable driven by Broc M. Riley, 26, crashed at milepost 8 while driving south on State Road 81 in Sardine Canyon, according to Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry.
Riley had been driving at a high rate of speed in the slow lane and came upon two vehicles on the inside lane. Riley’s car swerved between the other vehicles, hitting the center cement divider before going back across both southbound lanes and off the shoulder, Perry said.
The car jumped a large ditch into the mountainside and rolled. Riley was wearing a seat belt, but he was partially ejected and killed on impact.
“It appears he either wasn't using the shoulder part of the seat belt or he slipped out of the shoulder belt during the significant crash,” Perry said.
Several factors contributed to the crash, Perry said. Alcohol was found on the scene and police believe Riley was using his cellphone prior to the crash. He was also driving between 85 and 100 mph in a 65 mph area.
The crash is under investigation.
